Month of Gratitude, Day 21 – Suzette, Connecting Seniors and Students Together at Heritage House

The seniors of Heritage House at Pike Place Market, the assisted living facility, are friendly neighbors of the students of Pike Market Child Care and Preschool.

Suzette, Activities Manager for Heritage House, noticed the bright faces of the seniors when they waved to the children.

“I realized, with the kids, there’s just this energy that the seniors feel. It really picks their day up!” said Suzette.

Suzette got to talking with teachers from the preschool – and with the beginning of this school year they came up with a lovely unity of our community. Every other week, an excited classroom runs into Heritage House to meet seniors and work together on arts & crafts, storytelling, and music.

“We have many seniors here – some who are not into art or bingo but when the kiddos come, they’re the first ones here!”

By connecting programming between the preschool and Heritage House, Suzette is able to tap into the “hidden superpowers” of their senior community. With the help of seniors who used to be costume designers and artists, she plans to collaborate on a puppet show for an upcoming class. And in the spring, she plans on bringing the students and seniors together to grow their plants in the Pike Place Market Secret Garden.

THANK YOU, Suzette, for bridging generations together and making this community more tight-knit than ever. You make us #GratefulForPikePlace!
