Meet the Glean Team – a dedicated group from Pike Market Food Bank who help source local produce for our Market community.
Every summer in the high-growing season, the Pike Market Food Bank attends the satellite Pike Place Farmers Markets in downtown Seattle. When the Market starts winding down, they run up to the local farm booths and collect unsold fruits and vegetables. The Food Bank forges close relationships with these farmers, and ask them:
“Instead of composting what you didn’t sell, how about donating the produce to help feed our hungry downtown neighbors?”
The generosity of the farmers makes a huge impact. In July alone, they’ve gleaned 1,968 pounds of produce from satellite Farmers Markets! Because of these donations, the Pike Market Food Bank can put fresh seasonal produce in the hands of our neighbors who otherwise couldn’t afford it.
