Standard Items in a No Cook Bag
The No-Cook-Bag program provides ready-to-eat food to our neighbors in downtown Seattle who are experiencing homelessness, do not have a kitchen, or are in a situation that prevents or limits their ability to store, cook and prepare food.
Volunteer to help provide this vital food resource by gathering your family, friends and colleagues to assemble bags and deliver them to Pike Market Food Bank.
THE PROCESS
Process may vary based on group size, timing and budget.
STEP 1: Think about timing goal and number of bags:
- What is budget for purchasing supplies?
- How many bags do you wish to make?
- What is your timeline for assembling bags?
- What is the ideal date and times for the delivery of bags to the Market?
STEP 2: Contact AshleyM@PikePlaceMarketFoundation.org to confirm the details. Once details have been finalized, purchase enough items from the provided list to ensure each bag has one item from each category
STEP 3: Set up a No-Cook Bag assembly party with your group
Meet with staff at the Pike Place Market Foundation or Pike Market Food Bank to deliver the No-Cook Bags.
WHAT’S IN EACH BAG
You will be provided with an interactive budget template with links to acceptable products. Each bag should contact one of each: Protein, Fruit, Snack, Nuts, Bar and Drink.
BEST PRACTICES
All items must meet the following criteria:
- Ready To Eat: this means no prep, no heating, no water added
- Easy To Open: pop-top, tear open, or pull tabs
- Everything that goes in these bags needs to be able to be opened on the spot
- Shelf Stable: non-perishable and stored at room temperature
- Nutritious, avoid highly sugary foods
Items to avoid: Grapefruit, caffeine, or that require refrigeration
When community members do not have access to healthy, affordable, full-service grocery offerings within their neighborhood, it can lead to stress around food insecurity, having to choose lower-quality foods, and ultimately negative health outcomes
