Jim Chow Jewelry

Owhyee Picture Jasper Cushion Cut Pendant

Natural picture jasper makes the best conversation starter and is quintessential Pacific Northwest! Jim became entranced with these stones when he first began cutting rocks over 40 years ago, and it has shaped his jewelry work ever since. Natural pockets of landscape patterns can be discovered in this jasper, making each slice a one-of-a-kind image.

The Owhyee Picture Jasper mine was located along the south east edge of Oregon, near Idaho and the Owhyee river. Oregon was home to a few deposits of detailed picture jasper before it was mined out over 30 years ago. It is now sought by collectors and increasingly rare. This pocket yielded beautiful stones with blue/green “sky” and reflect the natural hills of the dessert around it.

Jim’s experience and collection allows him to find wonderful specimens of this unique stone. He searches, sorts and slabs hundreds of pounds to find scenes to meet his standard of quality. Using traditional lapidary techniques, he cuts and polishes each stone to highlight the hidden image inside. Always one-of-a-kind, this Northwest collection piece is set in sterling silver. What story do you see?
