Archimedes’ Hoof II – mixed media by Richard Hutter
Richard Hutter – Archimedes’ Hoof II
acrylic & charcoal on found-paper collage
5 x 5 inches
Seattle artist Richard Hutter creates abstract works with a bold graphic sensibility. Unified by an ongoing exploration of organic forms seen through an architectural lens, the work combines a range of mediums: painting, collage, printmaking, and drawing. With a fondness for found imagery, Hutter often incorporates engineering texts and diagrams for mechanical objects that contrast with the florid and bulbous shapes he overlays. “Archimedes’ Hoof II” as well as the rest of the Archimedes series focus on the interaction between geometric and organic imagery juxtaposed with the complexity of a layered found-paper background rich with industrial text. Their simplicity but tangible naturalness is evident, and the artist’s love of surface, texture, and pattern dominates formal issues, symbolic, or conceptual concerns.
