Spring is here, the flowers are blooming and the gardens are filling up! The Market Commons and the Pike Place Market Foundation have been working in partnership with the Food Access Program to connect people who live and work in and around the Market with information about our local food economy.
In 2013, the Pike Place Market Foundation began the Food Access Program through the work of an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer. It was started to enhance SNAP/EBT matching programs and has now expanded to include food education, advocacy, a CSA program and more subsidized shopping opportunities- all supporting local farmers and producers.
The Food Access Program strives to create an equitable path for all people at Pike Place Market to establish and maintain food security. The program’s goals include increasing food availability and access, expanding opportunities for education and promoting inter-agency collaboration. This year, the program is making some exciting changes following the opening of The Market Commons. There are a variety of new events and activities in the works, each aiming to meet the program’s goals.
Summer is just around the corner and with it comes new classes, the annual express farmers markets, Pike Place Market CSA boxes, Wednesday evening events, Pike Bucks, Fresh Bucks matching and more!
