Seattle Weekly’s “People of Pike Place Market” series and Voracious Tasting Awards to benefit The Market Foundation

Posted September 28, 2016

Seattle Weekly is producing a new monthly story series, called “People of Pike Place Market.” Each month you’ll hear from a farmer, resident, business owner, donor, family, or community member who reminds us that Pike Place Market is more than fish, flowers, and produce – this is a thriving community, built by generations of families and businesses who made the Market what it is today!

The first installment of this series features Joe Desimone (pictured), a longtime supporter of Pike Place Market Foundation, and whose grandfather, Guiseppe Desimone was one of the original farmers in Pike Place Market when it first opened in 1907. After immigrating to Seattle from Italy, Guiseppe eventually became part-owner of the Market and helped start a legacy of caring for our neighbors in the Market. Today, Joe Desimone is extremely proud of the legacy his grandfather built, one which carries forward today with the missions of Pike Place Market & Pike Place Market Foundation.

“It feels special for me because if my family had not kept the rents low, had not worked with people in difficult times, there possibly would not have been a Market today,” Joe says. “I’m very proud of the fact that my grandfather and father took a real chance—and now Seattle has something that is the envy of the world.” – Joe Desimone
