In the News:
This week Vermont became the first state to require labeling of foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Maine and Connecticut have passed laws requiring labeling, but they have stipulations that prevent them from making changes yet. Washington voted down a similar law last year. GMO foods were approved for human consumption in 1995, but the Food and Drug Administration never required any labels pointing them out as such. Vermont’s Governor, Peter Shumlin, expects the law to be challenged in court. Big food producers have a lot to lose with the negative stereotype on a GMO label. Despite the challenges ahead, Shumlin will support the law and as he said yesterday, “We will win the food fight!” Click here to learn more.
