Artwork that rocks!

Posted October 5, 2012

What does an Australian Hall of Fame rock band, Rachel the Piggybank and vegan delicacies at Michou Deli have in common? – Steve Kilbey, lead singer and bass guitarist for the popular Australian band The Church. He and The Church are best known for a number of global hits including “Under the Milky Way,” which charted at #24 in the US and also appeared in the 2001 movie Donnie Darko. Steve is also a prolific painter and has had art shows in Australia and America.

After arriving on tour in Seattle in 2009, Steve was on the hunt for the best vegan food in town. As he took in the bustling atmosphere of Pike Place Market, he happily found himself staring down the immense deli counter at Michou. Filled with so many homemade salads, sandwiches and other delights, Steve had the pick of vegan items to choose from: brussel sprouts, tofu sandwich and potato leek soup have become his must-have items every time he returns to this side of the pond.

Steve loves Michou so much he’s written a song about his favorite Seattle eatery and he’s even taken his hand at his other muse for Michou – painting.  Steve’s latest piece “Mona Lisa in Seattle” is now on sale with a portion of proceeds benefiting Rachel the Piggybank and the Pike Place Market Foundation. A limited edition of “Mona Lisa in Seattle” are now available online at www.pikeplacemarketfoundation.org or in-store at Michou Deli in Pike Place Market.

“Long may Pike Place Market greet weary musicians when they hit Seattle!” said Steve – a fitting sentiment for this art benefit that will indeed help do just that: The Market Foundation preserves the traditions and the community services right here at Pike Place Market.
